Flavours of Turkey in Istanbul
Just like the culture, the cuisine has soaked up various influences, blending Asian, Oriental and Mediterranean flavours. Heading back from the souvenir stands of the Grand Bazaar, try mezze, börek (savoury pastry) and cheeses which are part of the country’s rich culinary culture.
- Take a seat and sip on a Turkish coffee as you admire the Blue Mosque? Discover this model of Ottoman architecture which is the starting point for pilgrims heading to Mecca and delve a little deeper into the secrets at the heart of Turkey.
- Finally, bring your all inclusive holiday in Turkey to a close with a visit to Hagia Sophia, a basilica symbolising this overlapping of cultures. The first basilica of the Christina era was transformed into a mosque before becoming a museum.
At the limits of Asia and Europe, natural wonders are waiting for you in Turkey
Discover incredible landscapes during your all inclusive stay in Turkey. 3 hours from your Club Med Palmiye resort, make a stop at the Pamukkale natural site to admire its mineralised waterfalls which are a glistening, pristine white.
The magic continues in Cappadoce, at the Göreme National Park. Amongst the rocks forming chimneys, sculpted by erosion, several cave churches are hidden with incredible rock paintings, providing the perfect example of the beauty of Byzantine art.
30 minutes from the park, the wonders don’t cease as you discover the city of Kaymakli and its tunnels covering several kilometres. This underground city, over eight levels, is one of many troglodyte cities for which the region has become famous.
A mosaic of civilisations
Nurtured by Ottoman, Greek and Roman influences, Turkey's culture is just as varied as the landscapes.
- To brush up on your history, head for Ankara and the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations. Its large collection of artefacts, from the Palaeolithic era to the time of the Ottomans is an incredible archaeological journey.
- Continue your cultural immersion in the ancient Halicarnassus: just 30 minutes from Club Med Bodrum Palmiye resort, your stay in Turkey leads you to Bodrum’s Greek amphitheatre, which has been perfectly preserved since the 4th century BC.
- Just a few metres from the amphitheatre, take a running jump into the medieval period by visiting Bodrum Castle, which was built by the Order of Hospitallers.
Did you know? the Turkish Riviera is also beautiful in winter!
Take advantage of the fact that there are fewer tourists at this time of year compared to the summer season to spend winter holidays in the sun. If you are a foodie, Turkish cuisine offers versatility in its traditional dishes. With a hot mint tea, tasting delicious loukoums will immediately immerse you in Turkey's unique atmosphere.
Antique City of Hierapolis
At the top of the hill at Pamukkale, come and discover the ruins and ancient antique city of Hierapolis.
This spa town, which was built around the sacred source of Pamukkale, boasts particularly well-preserved remains. They demonstrate the importance of natural springs, resembling the Roman baths which today decorated the Hierapolis Archaeology Museum. The theatre or the temple of Apollo are also examples of these incredible vestiges which gained the site a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Basilica Sophia
Considered as the 8th wonder of the world, Hagia Sophia is the ancient basilica of Constantinople, edified between 532 and 548 and transformed into a mosque when the city was seized by the Ottomans in 1453.
In 1934, it became the Aya Sofya Museum. Hagia Sophia is the largest Byzantine architectural structure standing and is famous for its majestic interior decoration covering its floors and walls.
Sultan Ahmet Camii
The Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616 under the reign of Sultan Ahmet is probably Istanbul's most famous mosque. It was once the main starting point for pilgrimages to Mecca. Considered as the last example of Ottoman architecture in its classic form, the mosque rivals Hagia Sophia both in terms of size and the wealth of its earthenware and mosaics.
Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia
The rock-hewn sanctuaries of Cappadocia are unique in both their density and quality.
Wonder at the unique relics of post-iconoclastic Byzantine art, as you discover them in the setting of the breathtaking landscape of the Göreme National Park, sculpted by erosion.
A treasure trove of these priceless works of art which have been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pamukkale
The Pamukkale site, which literally translates as the “Castle of Cotton” is one of Turkey’s most stunning geographical sites.
These ancient Roman baths are known for their waterfalls, which have become mineralised by the white rock which does, indeed, look like cotton. Today, you can still enjoy its naturally warm springs, which are a pleasant 36°C.
